I did not like this presentation. It about how the board uses subcommittees in the South Colonie School Board. I came because we recently started using committees in Parkrose. I was hoping for hints on how to keep subcommittees from getting into management, instead of staying in policy where they should be.
I was in the wrong seminar for that.
They got into management -- too far into management. They had a board level committee to plan high school commencement. There were no rules for these committees. The board members had all known each other for a very long time.
I did pull one really useful idea from this seminar, a PTO council. Just a way of getting the PTO presidents together to share information with each other and the board. The idea was totally tangential to the goal of the seminar, but I really liked this idea.
